The ruling Shiv Sena retained its hold over Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) as its candidates won the elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor held on Wednesday.
Senior Sena leader and corporator Sanjay More won the election for the post of mayor defeating Congress nominee Vikrant Chavan by a margin of 20 votes. While More polled 66 votes, Chavan could garner only 46.
In the polls for the post of deputy mayor, Shiv Sena's Rajendra Sapte defeated Congress nominee Meghana Handore by the same margin.
Two of the Congress corporators- Ravi Phatak and his wife had already crossed over to the Sena and relinquished their corporatorship reducing the tally of the Congress by two.
Four other corporators remained absent during today's polls, while another corporator cross-voted in favour of Shiv Sena.
Senior Congress corporator Manoj Shinde arrived late in the House and hence could not vote.
The seven corporators of the MNS, the party which had given a helping hand to the Sena in the last such elections, remained absent.
