This festival enables all devotees of Muthappan to have a get-together.

Talking about the event, programme co-ordinator and member of Shree Muthappan Charitable Foundation, P Muralidharan told DNA, “The Vellattam is a form of spiritual dance performed in temples of North Malabar area of Kerala. The dance is performed along with the beats of Chendamelam, a traditional drum of Kerala.’’

The mahotsavam started with Mahaganpati Homam followed by Malayirakkal and Muthappan Vellattam. Chendamelam performed during the programme enthralled the audience. This year, the Vellattam was performed by Ganesh Peruvannan from Taliparamba of Kannur, Kerala.

One of the main attraction of the programme was the Muthappan Matappura — a replica of the temple of Lord Muthappan in Kerala.

The Vellatam is performed in front of this replica at the venue. Muralidharan said, “The worship of Muthappan is unique, as it does now follow the Brahminical form of worship i.e. idol worship but via a ritual enactment performed in front of Matappura. This is also considered a good omen to commence new ventures and the essence of this ritual is the victory of good over evil.’’
