The Friday incident was not unexpected for commuters who use the two stations — Parel and Elphinstone Road — for daily commuting. With narrow platforms, foot overbridge occupied with hawkers, majority of the commuters fear that similar incidents can happen again if necessary measures are not taken immediately.

Anjali Patil, a resident of Ghatkopar said, “Even before the commuters of one train cross the footover bridge, which is hardly 50 metres long, two more trains arrive at the station, and then the situation goes haywire.” She added that it takes almost 10 to 15 minutes to even cross the 50 metre-long stretch.

Another commuter, Mritunjay Shaha, a flower trader, who uses the Parel station almost every day said, “Friday was just another day when there was melee, and the situation got aggravated,” he said.
