SIU vice chancellor, Bhushan Patwardhan, said that the two programmes were a good opportunity for management students.

“Many students are interested in research and academic career but the present PhD programmes are not attractive primarily due to the open ended structure. Part-time PhD programmes may not bring necessary quality and many fellowships are available for full-time PhD programmes. After studying these problems, we are launching PG-PhD programmes through newly initiated research clusters, including health and biomedical, technology and design, social sciences and humanities,” he said.

The integrated MBA-PhD will be a 3-year full-time residential programme post-MBA and topics for PhD will be decided in consultation with corporates, governments and voluntary organisations. Students will have to work on site, participate in conferences, symposia and debates.

Any second-year MBA student from institution under SIU can apply, and selected students will be offered junior research fellowship for a monthly stipend, travel and other expenses.

Research clusters will promote inter-disciplinary research such as humanities and social sciences where they will be guided by senior faculty from both the fields.
