If things go as per the plans of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), you could book a parking slot when on the move itself. The civic body is planning to introduce an online parking booking system soon.
On Thursday, despite opposition from corporators, the BMC’s standing committee passed the proposal for a Web-based parking system in the city. As of now, the system, which is likely to be come into existence from May, will be able to stop contractors from fleecing people. But most importantly, it will help locate parked vehicles and help resolve cases of bomb blasts or theft.
As per the plan, all the 92 civic-owned parking lots will be linked to a centralised server. Staff will be appointed at all these lots and will be given hand-held devices to register the details of each vehicle parked there.
The devices will generate receipts automatically based on the entry and exit time of the vehicle.
“The data can be used to resolve cases of bomb blasts and theft, as we will have all the details such as the vehicle’s registration number, timings and locations,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner.
However, some corporators questioned the hurry to pass the proposal. “The rates about how much will be charged per vehicle per hour is not yet finalised. Even the number of vehicles that can be parked is not available to us yet. Why do they want to pass the system in a hurry,” asked Asif Zakaria, Congress corporator.
A mobile app to make things easier
You will be able to book your parking slot online, as the civic body has plans to introduce an online booking system for it. An app will also be made available, so you can book it on the go. Using the app, you will be able get details about vacant slots as well as booked slots, in addition to the duration for which the vehicles have been parked there
