Students who have a yen for science and love gazing at the stars have a contest tailor-made for them.

Kiran Bhandari, a city-based travel consultant, has come up with Space Habitat Design Challenge (SHDC) 2011 which will see students from schools all over the country develop a space city.

This first-of-its-kind challenge in India invites students between classes VIII and XII to envision life for human beings in space.
“India has a good space programme. Not many countries can boast of this. We need to be more involved with space,’’ Bhandari said.

Bhandari, an alumnus of the city-based the Bishop’s School, believes that a student can learn more out of practical experiences rather than theoretical knowledge.

“While I was pursuing my MBA studies in Singapore, I realised that one can gain knowledge more conceptually if one is made to practically apply ones creativity. This competition will give the student to do exactly that,’’ Bhandari told DNA.

The competition wants students to make the space city design in a span of two months, starting from July 31 to September 30 and send it to the organiser’s office in Pune.

The winners of the competition have the privilege to attend a fully funded computing camp in Singapore organised by the sponsors National University of Singapore, Team Business and Comfort Leisure, a travel and tourism company.

According to Bhandari, study material will be sent to the students after the registration. He said he had contacted 1,500 schools via email.
