The crime branch (cyber cell) on Wednesday arrested a 25-year-old resident of Colaba for allegedly creating an obscene profile of his female colleague, a resident of Antop Hill, and posting it on the Internet.

The accused Mohammad Abdullah Abdul Wahab had also posted the victims photograph and mentioned her contact details. “The profile also said that the victim owned a car and would be easily available for all those who needed her services,” said Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (crime).

According to the police, around two years ago Wahab and the victim joined a placement agency in Kandivili as senior executives and soon became good friends. A few months later, Wahab proposed to the victim but was turned down.

Though Wahab was agitated after the rejection, he continued his friendship with the victim. He later left the firm and joined another company in Powai.

“About a year ago, his firm sent him to Manila in the Philippines for some work. There he found the perfect opportunity to take revenge. Using his laptop, he created a fake profile of the victim and sent the link to her friends through a fake e-mail ID,” said Maria.

Soon the victim started receiving calls from her friends, telling her about the obscene profile. In March, the victim along with her parents visited the cyber crime investigations cell and registered a complaint. However, by that time Wahab had already returned to the city.

After investigation the police found that the email was from the Philippines. “We arrested Wahab on Wednesday after the victim told us about his marriage proposal and her subsequent rejection. During interrogation he confessed to the crime. We have also seized his laptop,” said Maria.

Wahab has been booked for publishing obscene information under the Information Technology Act.
