The work of issuing ‘Adhaar’ unique identification number (UID) cards is progressing at a slow pace in Pimpri-Chinchwad area. In five months, only 60,000 UID cards have been distributed. Apparently, dearth of staff and computers is hindering the pace of work.
According to some officials, considering that the population of Pimpri-Chinchwad area is around 17 lakh, about 125 computers are needed for the project.
“The Union government has allotted only 39 computers to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for the purpose. Hence, work is slow,’’ said Uday Tekale, nodal officer for Adhaar UID project, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and assistant commissioner of PCMC.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Ajit Gavhane pointed out during a recent general body meeting that there is tremendous rush at UID centres and the residents are forced to stand in long queues since morning.
“My feedback is that only 50 to 60 UID cards are allotted in a day,’’ he claimed. “We have 40 centres in the city for distribution of UID cards,’’ he added.Tekale said UID forms are distributed free and the deadline for completing the work was March 2012 and if the work is not over, further extension would be granted.
