After the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rains in Mumbai and Konkan over the next few days, the state's disaster management cell has issued orange and red warnings in Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri for today and tomorrow, and a high alert for Saturday in Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad areas for heavy to extremely heavy rains.
The Orange warning is for the administration and citizens to be prepared, and Red is an instruction for vigil and action. An officer at the disaster management cell said that Mumbai may experience a flashback of August and September 2017 as rainfall is expected to fall between 250-350 mm.
"Warnings have been issued to the Konkan divisional commissioner and district collectors from the Konkan region and Mumbai so that they can divert traffic, discharge water from irrigation dams, and plan for evacuation of residents from low-lying areas, said an official.
KS Hosalikar, scientist from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said monsoon will enter Konkan and Goa today, while heavy rains are predicted tomorrow and on Saturday. "Conditions will remain the same on Monday and Tuesday," he noted.
He assured that RMC is in constant touch with the government so that they can initiate necessary action. "Please do not spread rumours and circulate WhatsApp messages or spam mail before verification. Only believe information coming from the government and legitimate sources," the official said.
