The caste-based census in Pune is yet to kick off for want of stationery and tablet personal computers that need to be provided to the enumerators. The survey was to start on October 2.

As per the plan of the Union government, a socio-economic caste survey is to be conducted in the country, under which the caste of every citizen would be enumerated.

The deputy municipal commissioner, Praveen Ashtikar, told reporters that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has written to the authorities requesting the items for the census work. “Once the material is available, the work would start immediately,” he said.

About 2,000 staffers, including enumerators and supervisors, have been imparted training by the PMC authorities for the socio-economic caste survey.

Caste-based census was last done in the country in 1931.
