The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to develop four swimming pools in the eastern and western suburbs, for which it is scouting for sites.
A senior official from the civic garden department said the decision was taken following an increasing demand for pools in the suburbs.
He said the size of the proposed pools will be 25x15 metre, and they will be able to cater to around 200 people at a time. There will be five shifts each day of 45 minutes each.
The official added that this will be in addition to the seven pools already proposed. "Seven pools are already in the process of being developed across the city," he said. Tenders for three of these have been floated and four more will be floated in a month.
The BMC already has seven swimming pools operating in Dadar, Kandivali, Dahisar, Ghatkopar and Chembur, Mulund and Andheri. When the seven under process and the four proposed in the suburbs come up, the city will have a tally of 18 pools.
Meanwhile, redevelopment of the pool in Chembur is complete. But it cannot be started for want of a water connection. "The pool will be started by the end of this month," said the official.
A garden official said, in the next three years, Mumbai will have at least 15-16 pools.
