Solid Waste Collection and Handling (SWaCH) felicitated 13 women on Wednesday for being ideal SWaCH members and awarded them with the Sugandhabai awards. Each awardee got a certificate, a sweater and scarf and Rs400 deposited in their savings account.

The Sugandhabai award is given to waste pickers who are punctual at work, provide replacement in case of absence, work in pairs, receive no complaints from citizens,  attend monthly meetings, pay their monthly contributions, attend programmes organised by SWaCH, wear uniforms and identity cards to work.

The awardees are from Bhavani Peth, Kasba Peth, Tilak Road and Sahakarnagar wards.

SWaCH has 1,867 members covering 3,00,000 households for door-to-door collection of waste.

They also process organic waste in biogas plants and compost pits, and offer housekeeping services in housing complexes. Baba Adhav, corporator Avinash Bagwe and the PMC ward officers from  Bhavani Peth, Kasba Peth, Tilak Road and Sahakarnagar were present for the programme.
