A 13-year-old student hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his home in Chembur on Wednesday after his school’s principal reprimanded him.
Khalid Abdulla Shaikh, an 8th standard student of Swami Vivekanand School in Chembur, had a fight with his classmate Akshay on Wednesday. The principal called his parents to school at 5pm.
Sheikh stayed with his maternal uncle at Cheetah Camp in Trombay. “Since his mother had gone to their native home and his father is in Dubai, his uncle went to the school,” a police officer said. “The principal told his uncle about the fight. He asked him to provide Akshay, who was bleeding, with medical treatment.”
His uncle took Akshay to the doctor and got him treated. “The principal also asked him not to send Shaikh to school for a week,” the officer said. “When they reached home, his uncle told him that he wouldn’t go to school from Thursday.” He left the house soon after.
“When Shaikh’s cousin reached the house at 7.15pm she found him hanging from the ceiling fan,” the officer said. The boy might have felt humiliated after the incident, Jalindar Khandagle, the assistant commissioner of police, said, and this could
have prompted him to take the extreme step.
