A waste management summit in the city will teach Thanekars how to turn their waste into wealth without spending huge sums of money on resources and equipment

Environmentally-conscious housing societies in Thane have to look no further for cost-effective waste management. On Saturday, a waste management summit in the city will teach Thanekars how to turn their waste into wealth without spending huge sums of money on resources and equipment.

"There is a misconception that recycling/waste management techniques and tools are expensive. Through this summit we want to show them that you do not need so much money to manage waste which is wealth," says Kasber Augustine, president, Thane Citizens Forum (TCF). The summit will be held on January 13 at Little Flower High School in Thane west. It is a joint effort by the TCF, Maharashtra Go Green Foundation and the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

TCF which has paid a pivotal role in many citizen initiatives in Thane feels that it is the social responsibility of every citizen to keep their surroundings clean.

Personalities like Dr LP Naik, international award winner in waste management, will speak on the subject of waste to wealth while environmentalists will educate locals on techniques in waste management. "Dr Naik, who has made 40 tonnes of manure available to farmers through waste management, will speak about more such initiatives," said Augustine. Whereas TMC will tell citizens about the help it can provide to societies who wish to go for waste management.

Till now 100 out of 600 to 700 big housing societies and complexes from Thane have registered for this summit which is also open to societies from outside Thane.

Registrations for the summit are open till January 12 and those interested can mail tcfngo1@gmail.com and ggfngo@gmail.com.
