NCP president Sharad Pawar took a U turn on Tuesday saying that he did not demand a review of the Atrocity Act but said that no law should be misused.
A 15-year-old girl was brutally raped on July 13, allegedly by three men, before throttling her at Kopardi village in Ahmednagar. After this incident, there was demand to scrap the SC and ST(Prevention Of Atrocities) Act, 1989 by various Maratha-OBC organisations.
Addressing the media, Pawar said that there was no question of reviewing the Atrocity Act as it had already been approved by the parliament. "I have never seen this act being misused by a Dalit. However, the law which is for protection should not be misused," Pawar said.
He also said that the economically weaker Maratha community should get reservation. "Government can create the different section for the Maratha reservation. The Maratha and Muslim community should get reservations," Pawar said.
