The tragic incident just highlights the need to urgently implement the model school bus service in city schools.

All aspects of safety, security, and efficiency will be then taken care by the school with the help of bus contractors. If schools adopt this system and make it mandatory for students to travel by the school bus, then such incidents can be prevented.

The onus lies with the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) to implement stringent regulations on the kinds of vehicles used for transport of schoolchildren.

Another factor is that most school buses have more than one child per seat. It leads to overcrowding and several instances of buses overturning have occurred in the past.

This is mainly because the RTO’s rules do not mention the seating capacity of school buses. Schools, along with local traffic authorities, have to ensure that parents do not hire private vehicles.

The model school bus service is the only answer to prevent such tragic incidents.
