Three held in Pune for impersonating cops, robbing citizens

The unit IV of the crime branch unit of the Pune police bust a three-member gang that robbed citizens while posing as policemen.

The police seized a Sumo car, motorcycle, gold ornaments and police uniforms valued at Rs9.66 lakh from the suspects on October 27.

The police identified the arrested suspects as Bhurya alias Ayub Aiyaz Sayyed (40), Sattar Gulab Shaikh (50) and Garibshaw Shainu Irani (65), all residents of Ahmednagar.

Acting on a tip-off, a team led by police inspector, Arun Walture laid a trap at Mithanagar in Kondhwa and arrested the suspects and recovered the booty and the police uniforms from them.

Explaining the modus operandi of the suspects, deputy commissioner of police (crime), Rajesh Bansode said, “The suspects used to come in a Sumo. One of the suspects sat in the Sumo, while the others used to tell the victim that a serious crime incident had been taken in the area and requested the victim to place the ornaments in a bag. While putting the ornaments in the bag, the suspects used to steal them in a cunning way and sped away with the booty,” he said.

With this arrest, the city police claimed to have cracked 21 cases of the criminals impersonating policemen which were recorded in different parts of the city.
