In a shocking incident, a 28-year-old woman from a Mulund slum was seriously injured on Friday when the public toilet in which she was attending nature’s call was razed to make for the upcoming redevelopment project. The demolition team did not bother to check if there was someone inside the toilet.
According to the police, the incident took place at Gaunipada slum in Mulund (W) housing over 600 hutments, which are about to make way for a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project.
Officials said the plot’s developer had sought permission from the civic authorities for demolishing of the public toilet, which was part of the plot on which the construction is to come up, which they had got.
However, locals said when the toilet was being demolished on Friday morning, they heard a loud scream. They found out that one Sangeeta Kamble was inside the toilet and one of the razed wall had allegedly fallen on her, greviously injuring her back and shoulders.
“They should have at least bothered to check whether there was anyone inside the latrine,” said Savitri Naik, a local from the area.
Kamble is being treated at Agarwal Hospital in Mulund while a case of negligence has been registered with the local police station against the erring contractor.
