If the ban is put in place, the BMC will be following In the footsteps of the Pune Municipal Corporation where a similar proposal was approved on December 24.

A proposal for total ban on the use of polythene will be discussed during a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) meeting on Saturday.

Moved by city mayor Shraddha Jadhav’s office, the proposal has the support of leaders from both ruling and opposition parties in the BMC and is likely to get the political leadership’s nod. After this, the proposal will then be sent to the civic administration to ascertain its feasibility.

After the July 26, 2005, deluge, the government had banned polythene bags that were below 50 micron. However, it followed its earlier ban on below 20-micron bags.

While justifying her demand for a blanket ban, Jadhav argued that the partial bans had failed to curb the use of polythene bags. “These bags continue to choke drainage and sewer lines regularly,” she said.
