The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has undertaken a tree census in many parts of the city in which details of all trees would be recorded and photographs taken. The drive took off recently.
According to garden superintendent, Naresh Zurmure, the tree census would be done in the areas under the PMC regional ward offices of Yerawada, Hadapsar, Bibvewadi, Dhankavdi, Vishrambaugwada, Tilak Road, Sahakarnagar and Bhavani Peth. All trees, privately owned, government owned or owned by the PMC would be enumerated.
The tree census is being conducted by three agencies: Green Friends Environmental, Green Intervention, Pune and Dr Bhanuben Nanawati College of Architecture for Women, department of architecture landscape.
The tree census is being undertaken under The Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975.
The PMC has appealed to citizens, private institutes and government and semi-government agencies to cooperate with the enumerators.
