Ashwini Mohite and Chaitraly Sharma, two congenitally hearing impaired girls, beat back their challenge and cleared their SSC
examinations in style.
Ashwini, a student of the Karve Road-based Abhinava Vidyalaya secured 62% in her SSC results. “I did not have to study very hard. I studied during the last three months,’’ Ashwini said.
Ashwini, who is a Bharatnatyam dancer and likes playing badminton, said she wanted to pursue the science stream without interrupting her hobbies.
Detected with deafness at age 2, Ashwini thanks speech therapist Alka Hudlikar in helping her join a regular school and excel.
On the other hand, Chaitraly studied at the P Jog School in Kothrud and secured 50% marks in her SSC examination. Also coached in speech by Hudlikar, Chaitraly managed to surmount her challenges at school.
Hudlikar told DNA, “Early detection of Chaitraly’s disability and support from her family has helped her become a successful
student and assimilate with great ease inher daily life.’’
Chaitraly’s mother Neeta remembered her childhood and said, “I was scared when Chaitraly’s teacher told us that she did not respond when her name was called for the first time in kindergarten. However, we are beyond all that now.’’
An enthusiastic Chaitraly told DNA on Friday afternoon, “I plan to pursue a diploma in the arts field as I am very passionate about drawing. I also like skating, swimming and Bharatnatyam.’’
