Dongri police have arrested two people, including a woman, for allegedly murdering a 31-year-old Dongri resident in August. The two had called the victim to Naigaon in Palghar district claiming to be from the police and then allegedly murdered him.
The deceased has been identified as Vaibhav Devidas Achrekar, a resident of Poddar Building at Dr Maheshwari Road in Dongri.
According to the police, on August 20 between 10.30am and 8.30pm, the accused called Achrekar to Naigaon claiming to be from the police. They then took him to an isolated spot near Citizen Colony in Naigaon (E) and strangulated him using a rope, and threw his body into a river.
The two who have been arrested are friends. The woman has her marital home near the residence of the male accused. "After Achrekar went missing on August 20, his family lodged a missing persons complaint with Dongri police. Achrekar's photograph was then circulated in police stations across Mumbai and neighbouring cities. Then it was learned that an unknown body found in the jurisdiction of Valiv police station in Palghar was that of Achrekar," said an officer in Dongri police station.
When police analysed the mobile phone call details record (CDR) of Achrekar, they learned that the accused woman had called Achrekar several times. "On analysing the woman's mobile phone CDR, it was established that she had called Achrekar. The two were called to Dongri for questioning after which they broke down and admitted to committing the crime," the officer said.
As per sources in the police, the 34-year-old woman had an affair with Achrekar, but parted ways over some dispute. "The woman's new paramour, the co-accused, had claimed to be a cop and they both eliminated Achrekar, investigation revealed."
