According to Nashwan Aboali from the Yemen consulate, victim Ali Adrose Nasser Saleh, had sustained a bullet injury on his head during a civil war in Yemen and had been receiving treatment for the same at Fortis Hospital.

"Saleh had arrived in Mumbai on January 11 and on January 19th, he left the hospital and took a cab with his wife to return home, when their vehicle was accosted by a car somewhere near Vikhroli. As per Saleh, there were two persons in the car and one of them claimed that they were Mumbai crime branch officers and even showed an ID card," said a police officer.

He added, the suspects claimed that they had information that the victim was carrying drugs with him and that they wanted to check the vehicle. "The accused then took handbag of Saleh's wife and took out 4000 USD from it. The accused then later fled in their car," the officer said.

"Saleh and his wife then reached Vikhroli police station, but since there was a language barrier, the local police contacted our consulate and consul general Yahya Ghobar appointed me to assist the police. A complaint was then registered in the matter," said Aboali. The police managed to track the accused persons and arrested them from Andheri on January 31.
