The incident happened on the Jacob Circle-Chembur sector of the monorail. The injured have been admitted to Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar in northeast Mumbai.

One of the city’s most ambitious projects, the monorail was supposed to start functioning in August. Late on Friday, two workers were killed and three injured when the crane they were working on toppled at the construction site near the refineries at Chembur.

One of the workers was thrown to the ground from 25 feet while the other died after getting stuck between the girder and pillar. The injured workers were admitted to Rajawadi hospital at Ghatkopar.

The mishap took place around 6.30pm when Baldev Singh and Dinesh Kumar, the men who were killed, were working on the alignment of the guideway beams near the Bharat Petroleum depot. Eyewitnesses said there were no safety measures in place that could have averted the accident.

The RCS Marg police have said a case will be filed after the post-mortem is conducted. In a statement, the MMRDA called the accident “unfortunate” and said the families would be adequately compensated.
