The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) of Pune division arrested an assistant police sub-inspector (ASI) and a police naik attached with the Daund railway police for allegedly accepting Rs25,000 to suppress a police complaint.
The arrested ASI has been identified as Arjun Maruti Jathar (52) and police naik as Mohan Shankar Girije. Bhagwat Sheshrao Shinde of Mumbai lodged a police complaint.
According to the police, on September 5, an unidentified suspect stole Shinde’s cellphone and cash when the Latur-Mumbai train in which he was travelling was passing through Daund. Shinde lodged a complaint with Victoria Terminus railway police and the case was transferred to Daund railway police as the crime took place under the latter’s jurisdiction.
An ACB official told DNA, “Later, Shinde found his cellphone from a Sassoon Hospital staffer. However, the suspects seized the cellphone from Shinde’s house in Mumbai on Monday.” As Shinde had not informed the police about the cellphone recovery, suspects threatened to file a counter complaint and demanded money to close the case. The suspects were granted magisterial custody on Wednesday.
