The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to speed up the Unique Identification Number (UID) project from April 11, by which time a total of 140 scanning machines are expected to be pressed into service.
So far, 31,000 citizens have enrolled for the number, and the PMC plans to cover all three million-plus citizens by March 2012.
Deputy commissioner, Praveen Ashtikar, told DNA that presently, the facility for enrolment to get the UID is available at nine out of the 14 regional ward offices of the PMC. The plan is made to make the facility available at public locations in all 14 ward offices. At each centre, there would be 10 machines.
He said the PMC is working as a facilitator for the enrolment. Three private companies — Wipro, Terasoft and Smartchip — have been awarded contracts to enrol citizens for UID.
To get the UID, citizens have to reach the centre and file ‘know your residence (KYR)’ forms and provide proof of identity and residence. Once the documents are xxxx, the agency will scan each individual’s iris (eye), prints of all fingers will be recorded and a photograph will be taken.
Ashtikar said data concerning fingerprint, photograph, iris scanning as well as the one provided in the application will be recorded. The citizen will be given an acknowledgment.
He said once the data of a citizen is recorded, no changes will be permitted. Therefore, all information should be provided carefully.
After a month, each citizen will get a letter from the UID authority, giving their unique 12-digit number. The UID will be provided free of cost. Those who are below the poverty line (BPL) will be given Rs100 as incentive after getting the UID.
