The University Grants Commission has granted Rs25 lakh to the English department of Shivaji University (SU) under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) project.

The English department of the varsity would use the funds to study English literature. The project is for five years but can be extended by the UGC after reviewing the outcome of the first phase.

“Two different subjects will be studied. The first one includes post colonial English literature and the second one is comparative study of African-American literature and Marathi Dalit literature,’’ the head of department, PA Aattar, told DNA.

The post colonial English literature of India, Pakistan, African countries, Sri Lanka, Canada and Australia will be studied.
“The English literature of these countries means the post colonial literature.

The African-Americans had faced humiliation similar to Dalits in India. Hence, their literature reflects the same anguish. There will be comparative study between these two literature forms,’’ he said.

According to him, the department would do a comprehensive study of these subjects.
