University of Pune: VC appointment process begins

The process of appointing a new vice chancellor at the University of Pune (UoP) has finally begun. On Saturday, members of the management and academic council held a joint meeting in accordance with the Maharashtra University Act. They finalised the nominee for the selection committee.

According to the act, the selection process for vice-chancellor’s post requires the formation of a three-member selection committee.

The committee consists of  nominees by the governor of state, state government’s higher and technical education ministry and members of management and academic council.

The 133-member academic council and 20-member management council of UoP finalised the nomination of Dr Ram Deshpande, director, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, after a long deliberation on Saturday.

“The nomination would now go to the governor and after the other two nominations are made, the selection committee would invite people to apply for the post of vice-chancellor,” said Arunkumar Walunj, member of management council.
