Veg blues: Green chillies to keep burning a hole in people's pocket

There is a dip of around 20 per cent in supply of green chillies in the wholesale market that has affected price rise in the retail market.

After potato and green vegetables, now green chillies are pinching homemakers really hard. The retail price of green chillies have crossed Rs 80 per kg in the past fortnight. And according to traders, price of commodity is not going to come down due to rainfall in chilli growing areas.

There is a dip of around 20 per cent in supply of green chillies in the wholesale market that has affected price rise in the retail market.

The city receives green chillies from various source including Tamil Nadu, Andhar Pradesh and Karnataka. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka witnessed arrival of monsoon and that affected the crop. "These are major supplier of green chillies and there is a dip of around 20 per cent," said an administrative officer from Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) Vashi.

The city needs around 1100 to 1200 quintal of green chillies everyday. But, the supply is around 900 quintal. "The quality of the spice is not good which is affecting availability in good quantity," said a trader from APMC Vashi.

At present, the price of green chillies in APMC is between Rs 40 to 60 per kg. "The retail price is always around 50 to 60 per cent higher than wholesale," said a trader. However, he added that there is need a mechanism to control in retail pricing.

Price of green vegetables have already shot up and now cost of green chillies is only adding to the woes of homemakers.
