Supporting the indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi by social crusader Anna Hazare starting on April 5, various city-based NGOs started a signature campaign on Sunday.

Volunteers are spreading awareness among citizens about the Jan Lokpal Bill  and its need to fight corruption during the drive.

India Against Corruption Movement, Professionals Party of India, Parivartan, Dnyan-Setu, Sajag Nagrik Manch, Art Of Living and Bhrashtachar Virodhi Janandolan Nyas of Ralegan Siddhi kicked off the campaign.

The bill will facilitate the institution of a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in states to act as watchdogs. They will have autonomous status similar to the Supreme Court and the Election Commission.

Volunteers representing the social organisations were making citizens understand the need for such a bill to fight corruption and requesting them to sign for the cause.

"On the very first day of the campaign, we managed to collect around 1,000 signatures. The drive will continue till April 5," said said Yatish Devdiga, a volunteer of Parivartan.

Bhavesh Bhati, a volunteer of Dnyan-Setu said, “On April 5, a silent march will be held from Nal Stop on Karve Road to Bal Gandharva Chowk in support of our demand.”
