Motorists expecting better east-west road connectivity between Jogeshwari and Goregaon have to wait for four months up to a year, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to complete construction of the Jogeshwari south rail over-bridge by mid-June; BMC should finish work on Jogeshwari north rail over-bridge by year-end.
"Work on the Jogeshwari South bridge is proceeding smoothly. We have set June 15 as the deadline to open the bridge to Mumbaikars," said SO Kori, BMC's chief engineer, bridges. This bridge will link the existing Jogeshwari railway station and the Jogeshwari harbour railway station, which is under construction.
But work on the other bridge, namely Jogeshwari north bridge, is presently stuck because of obstacles in the form of encroached structures on the eastern side of the railway tracks. Hence the year-end deadline for this bridge.
Work on both bridges has been rescheduled repeatedly, because of delays in clearing unauthorised structures that blocked the way.
Once open, the bridges will link SV Road and the western express highway. The bridges will also remove the need for the level crossing underneath, which will be closed permanently. Its closure will create the possibility of more trains being operated on the western railway line.
When construction of the bridges was begun in 2009, March 2011 was set as the month of completion.
