The Occupy Wall Street movement, which is gaining tremendous support globally, has reached Mumbai. The first in a series of agitations was held outside Dadar station on Saturday. It was organised by students, youth and women organisations affiliated to Communist Party of India (Marxist).
“Our effort was to extend solidarity to the protesters who are demonstrating against the harmful economic policies all over the world. Uncontrolled economic liberalisation and accumulation of money to a few private players has harmed nations. The same thing is happening in India and if measures are not taken at the right time, then the day is not far when we also will suffer an economic crisis,” said Shailendra Kamble, state secretary, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).
Organisations such as Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Democratic Womens’ Association (AIDWA) participated in the demonstration.
“We are not copying the movement, but what is happening in India, currently, is nothing different than what has happened there in the West. They are experiencing the harmful effects of neo-liberal policies. Here, the employment rate is decreasing, education is getting costlier and inflation is at all-time high. There is no reason why Indians should not join the protest,” said Avinash Salvi, secretary, Mumbai district, SFI.
Kamble mentioned that organisations are planning to expand the agitations.
