Irked with irregular water supply for over a week, residents of the A ward that includes areas like Fort, Colaba, Churchgate took out a morcha to the ward office on Monday.
Many parts of the city are facing water supply issues like low pressure, scarcity of water, delay in supply etc. over the last two weeks. Corporators from various political parties have been raising this issue in standing committee as well as in house meetings. Even the PWD office wrote a letter to the A ward office about irregular water supply to ministers' bungalowa in the last one week and asked them to arrange for 8 to 10 tankers daily. On Monday, residents took out a morcha to A ward office to protest against irregular water supply. "We are facing an acute shortage of water for two weeks," said corporator Makrand Narvekar from A ward. After that, the residents held a meeting with A ward officials as well as hydraulic engineers about irregular and insufficient water supply.
Hydraulic department had taken up works on September 25 and 26 to connect surface level pipelines with the tunnel between Powai and Veravali section. During this work air pockets had developed in the pipeline system which create supply issue. Many areas in western city faced water problem. But parts in South Mumabai faced the acute shortage.
A ward is at the end of the water supply network. The water supply in this ward has already been affected because of Metro works. Many times underground pipelinces damaged due to work. Though many old buildings in this area dont have water tanks, they affects most. All this issues are make water shortage issue more severe. Even the hot month of October see rise in demand of water.
Ashok Kumar Tawadia, Chief Engineer of BMC hydraulic department said, "We had taken some work for improvement that affects water supply in many parts of city. But now work has been completed and supply issue is resolved."
This year city lakes have 95 percent of water but BMC hasn't declared any water cut yet.
