Door of Mercy has been closed at Mount Mary's Basilica due to ongoing protest

A group of protestors are currently voicing dissent against apparent corruption and mismanagement on part of the Church authorties. Three amongst the protestors claim to be on a 'fast unto death'. The Door of Mercy has been shut on account of the protest being conducted there.

Amidst shocking developments, the 'Door of Mercy' at Mount Mary's Basilica, Bandra, has been closed due to congregation of a group of protestors there. According to a report by Mid-day, the dissent is against apparent mismanagement and corruption on the part of the Church authorities. Some of the protestors have undertaken a 'fast unto death' to stress on the importance of their cause. The fast which began on Sunday, has been led by The Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC) and Catholic Residents Organisation for Social Service (CROSS).

Statements from the AOCC have blamed the Church for corruption as donations and resources have been apparently misused. Even as the protestors are being blamed by some for shutting down of the Door, they stand by their cause.

The Church in retaliation, has given a statement saying that they are open to dialogue. The Church is also upset that the protest is being conducted at a shrine, instead of the Bishop's House. They seem sure that no amount of pressure will affect their point of view on the issue.

AT A GLANCE
Inconvenience is being caused to residents of Mumbai who wish to walk through the Door of Mercy. Dissent against the Church's apparent misconduct has caused a stalemate between the Church and the protestors, thereby disrupting religious activities.

While residents of Mumbai travel across the city to walk through the Door of Mercy, the protest and shutting of the Door has led to widespread disappointment as no longer can people obtain plenary indulgence, which means remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins. Now the Door of Mercy in Colaba is the only one currently available for remission, due to the deadlock between the protestors and the Church.
