Axio's permanent solution to the golden hour rush

His unique bandage has been saving several precious lives are being saved every day, be it in road accidents, natural calamities or survival on borders. The first-of-its-kind emergency thermostatic dressing, AXIOSTAT, stops profuse bleeding in less than 3 minutes.

Leo Mavely’s start-up company Axio Biosolutions has received the Anjali Mashelkar Inclusive Innovation Award 2013 for this. The award was given to him at the First National Seminar on Social Innovation held in the city on Saturday at YASHADA.

The product is useful in accident cases where the first one hour is called the golden hour as a lot of blood flows during this one hour.

“Preventing bleeding at the accident spot effectively saves a life. It also gives the first responders an easy way to manage the victim’s case by stopping blood loss immediately in both civilian and military scenario,” said Leo Mavely, CEO, Axio Biosolutions Pvt Ltd. The company is based at Ahmedabad. He said that currently there is no product available in the Indian market for treating the external bleeding at the accident spot.

“Axiostat is India’s first emergency dressing in the market for controlling profuse traumatic bleeding. It has been already proven useful in trauma injuries from road accidents, industrial accidents, military conflicts, and other emergency services,” he added.

The product was developed by Mavely at NirmaLabs at Nirma University and had received funding from the Department of Science and Technology and Gujarat Venture Finance Limited. He said that Axiostat was the first external hemostat in India to be awarded the presitigious CE mark by European Union.  Axiostat is now being exported to many countries in Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa. Currently Axiostat is being offered in many variants targeting small to moderate bleeding injuries. The price ranges from Rs90 to Rs650.

Axio’s vision is to make Axiostat the essential part of every first-aid kit in the country by 2018, concludes Mavely. 

How the product is used?
The product, made of 100% natural biomaterial, contains poly-n-acetylglucosamine, which reacts with blood and clots it immediately. “Any first responder can apply the dressing on a victim. The product looks like a sponge and acts like a mechanical barrier on the blood. Once the victim is taken to the hospital and the doctor applies saline, Axiostat turns into a soft gel and can be washed away from the wound,” said Mavely.
