Vajpayee became PM after opening hospital in Pune

Will history repeat itself for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)? This is the question doing the rounds of the corridors of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

On Friday, the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is slated to inaugurate a new super-specialty building of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

Down memory lane, it was Atal Behari Vajpayee who became prime minister after inaugurating Sanjeevan Hospital after it was taken over by Jnana Prabodhini Trust in 1994. As prime minister, Vajpayee made it a point to inaugurate the new building of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on November 1, 2001.

Today, Jnana Prabodhini Medical Trust is managing the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital as far as medical services are concerned.

According to sources, it was the decision of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar to invite Gujarat chief minister Modi to inaugurate the super-specialty hospital built adjacent to the existing Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital building. The super-specialty hospital building would be inaugurated by Modi on Friday, November 1, the same date on which Vajpayee had inaugurated Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

Lata Mangeshkar’s father, the late Deenanath, died in Pune for want of medical treatment on April 24, 1942. Thus, Lata wanted to start a hospital in the city. In 1994, when Jnana Prabodhini Medical Trust decided to take over the responsibility to run the Sanjeevan Hospital, the melody queen invited Vajpayee as chief guest to inaugurate it.

Almost the entire team of Sanjeevan Hospital, including Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, later shifted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.

While the hospital administration, under the leadership of its medical director Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, is gearing up for a grand function at the super-specialty hospital building on Friday, the Maharashtra Education Society (MES) has given its ground on the Abasaheb Garware College campus for the formal function to mark the inauguration. The doctors and the staff at the hospital are discussing the same point by pointing out that Vajpayee also became prime minister after yielding to the melody queen’s invitation to inaugurate Sanjeevan Hospital and obliged by inaugurating Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and whether history would repeat itself for Modi.

The administration wanted to the date of November 1 for inauguration of the super-specialty hospital and that is the reason Modi has been invited to inaugurate the building on November 1, despite the fact that the actual working of the hospital could be started almost more than a month after the formal inauguration.

For a smooth and incident-free movement of the convoy, the dry run was conducted from Airport to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and then continued till Garware College, where the last programme is scheduled to take place.
