Bombay High Court upholds life term for baby-killer mum

Showing no leniency to the woman who jumped from the terrace with her baby with the intention of killing it and committing suicide, the Bombay High Court has upheld her life sentence.

A division bench of justice VK Tahilramani and justice Sadhana Bhosale dismissed the appeal filed by 21-year-old Savita Bhosale, a resident of the city, who is currently at the Yerwada prison.
According to the prosecution, the woman jumped off the terrace of her building with her 15-day-old infant on November 10, 2005 and when she found the child still alive, she stabbed it with a kitchen knife.

Both mother and child were rushed to a nearby hospital where, on examination, the doctor found that the baby’s intestines had come out.

When questioned, Bhosale admitted to stabbing the baby and she had no desire to live. She also told the doctor that she found the baby abnormal.

While the woman fractured her legs in the fall, the child succumbed to the knife injuries.

On January 22 2008, the Pune sessions court found Bhosale guilty of murder and sentenced her to life imprisonment. Bhosale then challenged the order before the high court which rejected the defence arguments blaming the father for the child’s death and claiming that Bhosale was falsely implicated.

The HC also rejected the argument that the infant accidentally fell from terrace on the grill below and sustained injuries.
