30 athletes named for Shiv Chhatrapati Awards

Mumbai: Come Sunday and Maharashtra’s highest awards for sports, the Shiv Chhatrapati Awards, will be given away to 30 athletes from across the State.

And one of the names which might raise a few eye-brows is Sham Rahate, the bodybuilder who was involved in the fracas at the ‘Mr India’ bodybuilding competition held last month in the city.

The awards were announced last week in Pune by the Maharashtra State Deputy Director of Sports, Narayan Shorte. When enquired about Rahate’s inclusion in the list, he said, “These awards are based on the performance of athletes in the last year. Anything that happens after that is taken into consideration only the next year.”

This is also the first time since the awards were instituted in the 80s that the Shiv Chhatrapati Raje Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar (lifetime achievement award) will be shared by two people — Prabhakarrao Ambadas Vaidya (volleyball, Amravati) and Shivajirao Rangnath Nalawade (wrestling, Osmanabad).

However, the rule books do not permit sharing of the award by two people. When questioned on whether there is a rule which states that two people cannot be given this award, Shorte said, “There is a such a rule but there is also another clause, which states that the government is the final deciding authority. This decision has been approved by the Chief Minister and the Minister of Sports.”
