After a 38-year wait, Indian football fans will once again witness the sight of Pele in India. The Brazil legend has accepted an invitation to attend the final of the 56th edition of the Subroto Cup as chief guest.
Pele, during his stay in India from October 11-17, will first travel to Kolkata on behalf of the Multicon Group and then to New Delhi for his first trip ever on behalf of the Indian Air Force.
Pele last visited India in 1977 with former club New York Cosmos, when they played against Mohun Bagan in Kolkata. The match featured Indian football greats like Shyam Thapa, Pradip Chowdhury, Subrata Bhattacharya, Sudhir Karmakar and Prasun Banerjee.
The three-time FIFA World Cup winner recollected his first trip to India in a video message and said he was eager to come back again.
"Excited to come to India. It is a very special country. I remember I played in Kolkata in 1977 with my team New York Cosmos. Thank you for the invitation to be your guest. I look forward to meeting with the young generation of India. See you in Delhi," the legendary footballer said.
