ROME: The Italian football league's disciplinary commission on Friday suspended AC Milan striker Marco Borriello with immediate effect after he failed a doping test.
The anti-doping agency of Italy's Olympic Committee (CONI) said on Thursday that the 24-year-old had tested positive for prednisone and prednisolone - which indicate the use of cortisone - after undergoing a routine test at the end of Milan's 2-1 home defeat to Roma last month.
Borriello's suspension was confirmed by Milan on their official website. A back-up player rather than a first-team regular, Borriello will find out his punishment after a test on a second urine sample is carried out by CONI.
Borriello, who has scored one goal in seven appearances this season, is the first Serie A player to fail a dope test this season.
He started his professional career with Treviso in 1999 and got his big break at the start of the 2002-03 season when he was snapped up by Milan.
Borriello made just three appearances before being loaned out to Empoli.
He returned to make four appearances the following season, but his failure to impress resulted in further loan moves to Reggina, Sampdoria and then back to his first club, Treviso.
A former Italy under-21 international, Borriello rejoined Milan for the start of the current season.
Milan had a torrid time this year having been docked eight points for their role in the matchfixing scandal. They currently lie five points above the relegation zone with six wins in 17 matches.
