Australian World Cup defender Tony Popovic has joined Qatar league outfit Al Arabi, the club announced on Tuesday.

DOHA: Australian World Cup defender Tony Popovic has joined Qatar league outfit Al Arabi, the club announced on Tuesday.

"Popovic signed a one year contract with Al Arabi," said the team who did not reveal the fee.

The 33-year-old former Sydney United and Sanfrecce Hiroshima star, who has played 57 times for the Socceroos, said he was looking forward to life with his new club after being released by English Championship team Crystal Palace this summer.

"This is a new experience and a new challenge and I will do my best to help my new team next season," he said.

Al Arabi will be coached this season by Henri Michel.

Meanwhile, former Nigerian international Jay-Jay Okocha is also moving to Qatar to play for Qatar Club.
