Bajrang Punia got home to a grand welcome on Tuesday night after winning a gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang.

The wrestler landed at the Delhi International Airport at about 9.15 pm IST, with hundreds of fans waiting for him with flowers and deep affection. Such was the crowd that Punia took about an hour and a half just to get outside of the airport. Members of the Central Industrial Security Force had to be called in to control the army of admirers.

 

"Last evening, as soon as I reached the Delhi airport, there was a sight to behold. All my mates were present, showering me with love. The happiest bit for me was the presence of my guru Yogeshwar Dutt and my brother Deepender Hooda at the airport," Punia wrote in a tweet on Wednesday morning.

"Yogi bhai (Yogeshwar) had told me that he'd won a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games and this time it was my turn. I'm glad I could live up his his expectations," Punia said at the airport upon his arrival. The 24-year-old also stated that it was the love of his fans that keeps him motivated.

 

Punia, known as Bajrangi Bhaijaan among his peers, had won a gold medal in the 65 kg Freestyle category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. On Monday, after winning another gold, he didicated his medal to late Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
