Cabinet clears Delhi's 2014 Asian Games' bid proposal

New Delhi has bid for hosting the 17th edition of the Games, the decision on which would be taken in Kuwait at Olympic Council of Asia's meeting on April 16-17.

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared New Delhi's bid proposal for 2014 Asian Games and reaffirmed the Government's determined effort to host the event.

"Government through the Prime Minister had sent its commitment to the Olympic Council of Asia for its firm and determined effort to host these Games," Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunshi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

"The Cabinet further appealed to Asian countries to support our bid to host the best possible Asian Games so far," he said.

New Delhi has bid for hosting the 17th edition of the Games, the decision on which would be taken in Kuwait at Olympic Council of Asia's meeting on April 16-17.

The Indian capital, which last hosted the event in 1982, will be competing with South Korean city of Incheon. Korea last hosted the Games in 2002 in Busan.

The first Asian Games flame was lit by Jawarlal Nehru in 1951 and the 9th Asian Games were inaugurated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
