Dilip Vengsarkar is concerned about the health of Mumbai cricket. The former India skipper, who was at the Police Gymkhana for the Police Shield prize distribution function on Sunday, expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of doggedness on part of youngsters playing the game in the maidans.

He felt that youngsters need to convert starts into big scores. “Youngsters should be hungry. They shouldn’t be happy by just scoring a century. Look at how Wasim Jaffer made big runs. You should look to score double and triple hundreds once you get to the three-figure mark,” he said.

“If you want to play at the highest level you have to score big runs consistently,” he added. “You have to be very strong in the mind and then you can achieve your goals,” said Vengsarkar.  He also said that “adaptability” is the key to success in this age. “With the advent of the Twenty20, players have to be versatile and adapt to all the formats,” he added.

Parkophene Cricketers won their maiden Police Invitation Shield beating New Hind SC by 7 wickets on Sunday.  Brief scores: New Hind 126 & 253 (P Naik 70) lost to Parkophene 252 & 128-3 (P Waghela 46) by 7 wickets.
