Yusuf Pathan, who was given the cold shoulder by national selectors after a none-too-impressive performance in recent months, has found an ardent supporter in Darren Berry. The director of coaching of Rajasthan Royals defended Baroda allrounder, saying the latter would soon be back in the national team. Berry was talking to newspersons after the Royals’ five-day high performance camp at Sardar Patel Gujarat stadium Motera, on Friday.
Pathan has not done justice to his potential at the international level. After a hurricane 59 off 38 balls against Sri Lanka way back in February, Yusuf has reached double figures only twice. He played a major role in Royals’ success in the inaugural IPL, but his inconsistent form was a major reason the Royals doing badly this year. However, it is the Baroda dasher’s form in ODIs that has come under the scanner.
“It is a challenge for Yusuf. He has to adapt to conditions in all formats of the game. Being a talented cricketer, I am confident of Yusuf’s comeback in the national team,” said Berry, who is all praise for Gujarat players.
Berry felt that with Indian Premier League-3 coming back to India, it will allow his players to perform better. “We didn’t do too well in South Africa. But back in India, players like Munaf (Patel), Ravindra (Jadeja) and Yusuf will regain their touch as conditions suit their style of play,” he said.
Berry talked about the Royals’ preparations for the next IPL, but the disappointment of missing out a Champions League spot was very much evident in his voice.
The Australian was also happy with Amit Singh’s improved bowling action. “He is working on new variations. NCA, Bangalore has helped him correct his action,” said Berry.
According to Berry, the Royals’ captain-coach Shane Warne has made his job a lot easier. “Warne is completely focused on his job. We are in regular touch. In fact, he called up today morning to know about the ongoing camp. I am assisting him,” he said.
Berry also expressed satisfaction with the facilities and hospitality provided by the Gujarat Cricket Association. “I am happy that we are going to play four of our home matches on this ground.”
