England manager Fabio Capello has apologised to all the Three Lions’ fans for his team’s disastrous World Cup campaign in South Africa.
“I just want to say sorry to the fans who joined us in South Africa. They had a lot of confidence in the team and the results weren’t possible,” News of The World quoted Capello, as saying.
“I also had a lot of confidence because my target was to play the final and we didn’t play,” he added.
During the World Cup, England had struggled to qualify from their Group C, drawing with the United States and Algeria, and was later humiliated by Germany in the Round of 16.
The Italian also admitted that he had expected the Football Association to sack him from his six million pounds-a-year job.
“If the FA had decided to sack me, I would have understood it,” he added.
“This is not a good period for me, but I am looking ahead. When you win you are the best and when you lose you are nothing. The day after the Germany game I spoke with Sir Dave and told him he had to decide, but I am a fighter,” he added.
Capello will start over again when he begins preparations for Wednesday’s friendly with Hungary at Wembley.
