First ‘Indian’ athlete to win two Olympics medals in single edition, it’s not Manu Bhaker

After winning a bronze medal on Sunday, Indian shooter Manu Bhaker scripted history at the Paris Olympics 2024 as she won another bronze medal in a mixed 10m air pistol event with Sarabjot Singh on Tuesday. With this feat, she has become the first Indian athlete to secure two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. 

However, the 22-year-old is not the first to win two Olympic medals for India in a single edition. Long before her success, Norman Pritchard paved the way for India by securing two medals at the 1900 Olympics which was also held in Paris.

Born in Kolkata, Pritchard was a British Indian athlete who had won two silver medals in men’s 200m sprint and 200m hurdles events. According to Olympics.com, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) still considers Norman Pritchard to be an Indian athlete and attributed both his Olympic medals to India.

However, Manu is the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic medal multiple times in a single edition post-independence. She opened India's medal tally at the Paris Olympics 2024 after winning a bronze in the women's 10m air pistol event on Sunday.

She's now become the second woman to secure two Olympic medals for India. Before her, this milestone was set by badminton player PV Sindhu who clinched a silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, followed by a bronze in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
