KOLKATA: Amidst speculation that he would be included in the India Test team for the South Africa series, Sourav Ganguly had an intense practice session at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

The former captain had stints with both the bat and the ball along with other members of Bengal team during the net practice session that commenced this morning and stretched past noon.

The elegant left-hander seemed in good form with the willow, unleashing a barrage of delectable shots both off pacers and spinners, as a large media contingent gathered to capture him in action.

Bengal are scheduled to take on Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group match from December one. Ganguly, who led Bengal in their tournament opener versus Punjab, has given indications that he desired to relinquish the captaincy as he expected a recall to the national team.

However, there was no official confirmation.

The sporting circles across the country have been speculating on Ganguly's comeback to top-flight cricket in view of the dismal performance by the Rahul Dravid-led squad in South Africa, where the batting has repeatedly failed in the one-day matches.

The Test team for South Africa is slated to be announced on Thursday.

Ganguly last played for India in the Karachi Test against Pakistan earlier this year.
