Looking for a way to kick-start your Christmas spirit? It’s in the air and it’s time to drive down to the Mahalaxmi racecourse to start celebrating.
This Sunday brings the best of both worlds, the 64th running of the Grade 2 Maharaja Sir Harisinghji Gold Trophy, a high profile race backed by the family of late Maharaja and the festive carnival.
The afternoon will see an action packed race card with the running of three other important races, the Municipal Commissioner’s Trophy, the NM Irani Trophy and the Uttam Singh Trophy.
The latter, a legend at 97, has dedicated seven decades of his lifetime to the sport of horse racing in the capacity of a jockey and subsequently as a trainer, where he won the Indian Oaks seven times and the 1,000 guineas six times.
The Maharaja Sir Harisinghji Gold Trophy race illustrates the royal family of Jammu and Kashmir’s long time involvement in equestrian sports in Mumbai. A link that began as early as 1953, when Harisinghji had the first running of this race during his lifetime with the presentation of a silver trophy.
The running of this race is the first of many milestones in a long history between the family of Harisinghji and horse racing at the Mahalaxmi racecourse, a legacy they are keen to take forward.
Harisinghji’s grandson Maharaj Kumar Ajatshatru Singh with his wife Kuwarani Ritu Singh and their children Rajkumari Adhishree Singh and Rajkumar Ranvijay Singh will present the trophy on Sunday.
