JALANDHAR: A comprehensive sports complex containing an international cricket stadium, estimated at a whopping cost of Rs 200 crore, will replace the ancient
Burlton park stadium here soon.

"Approval for the project has already been obtained from general house of Municipal Corporation and under the consultation of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) a renowned architect has been assigned the task to finalise the design of the proposed international cricketstadium," Rakesh Rathore, Mayor of MCJ said.

Asked about the source of revenue for the prestigious project, Rathore said that out of total land of 63 acre at Burlton park, about eight acre would be earmarked for shopping
complex and a five star hotel to generate revenue of Rs 200 crore for the project.

"We have already consulted I S Bindra, President of PCA and a designer from England is on the job to design the stadium to be equipped with all ultra modern facilities,"
Rathore, who himself is a former Ranji Cricket player, said.

The stadium would be later handed over to PCA on lease basis, so that international matches could be organised at the stadium, Rathore said.

"In the years to come tournament like Indian Premier League (IPL) would be organised here and Punjab would emerge as an important venue with the state having three
international stadiums at Mohali, Bhatinda and Jalandhar.

"The work on the design would be completed by this month only and it is expected that the project would be completed within two years," he added.

The complex will also have facilities for other sports like Swimming and Lawn tennis apart from already constructed Hockey Stadium, he said.
